Leg Kit for Aluminum Trench Box Systems

The Leg Kit elevates aluminum trench boxes up to 2 feet off the trench bottom, providing additional working depth and clearance for pipes, fittings, or uneven excavation floors. Constructed from durable, job-site-ready materials, these legs attach to trench box frames to extend effective working depth without requiring deeper-rated panels or additional stacking hardware.

Why Choose Leg Kits

  • Extended Working Depth: Gain up to 2 additional feet of protected workspace below the trench box
  • Pipe Clearance: Elevate panels above installed utilities, valve boxes, or connection points
  • Uneven Terrain Adaptation: Compensate for sloped or irregular trench bottoms
  • Cost-Effective Depth Extension: Add working depth without purchasing larger panels or stacking systems.

When to Use Leg Kits

Use Leg Kits when you need protected working space below the trench box bottom—common in utility installation where workers must access pipe connections, fittings, or valve assemblies beneath the shoring system. They’re also valuable for adapting to uneven excavation floors or extending depth capacity in appropriate soil conditions.

They’re especially valuable for:

  • Utility installations requiring access below pipe grade for connections or fittings
  • Municipal water/sewer work with valve boxes or manhole tie-ins below trench box bottom
  • Sloped or uneven trench floors where one end needs additional elevation
  • Extending effective working depth in stable soil without adding panel stacks
  • Rental fleets offering depth flexibility without maintaining oversized panel inventory

Why Leg Kits Matter

Trench boxes protect workers, but they also take up vertical space. In utility work, the critical tasks—making pipe connections, installing fittings, tying into existing lines—often happen at the very bottom of the excavation. Without leg kits, crews either work unprotected below the box or over-dig the entire trench to get protected clearance at working depth.

Leg kits solve this by lifting the shoring system off the trench floor, creating protected workspace underneath. For contractors, this means faster installations without sacrificing safety. For rental operations, it extends the usable depth range of existing equipment without investing in larger panels.

Safety & Compliance

Leg Kits extend working depth below the trench box but do NOT increase panel load ratings or soil pressure capacity. Use only in stable soil conditions (typically Type A or firm Type B) where an additional 2 feet of unshored depth meets OSHA 1926 Subpart P allowances for competent soil. Soil conditions, trench depth, and panel ratings must still comply with OSHA requirements. Consult a competent person or our team for application-specific guidance before deploying leg kits.

Primary Applications

  • Water main and sewer line connections requiring below-grade access
  • Gas line installations with valve assemblies below pipe elevation
  • Storm drain tie-ins and catch basin construction
  • Utility repair work accessing existing infrastructure at trench bottom
  • Any excavation where working depth exceeds standard panel coverage in stable soil
